Create a custom-made fabric-and-wood hanging shelf that has a built-in compact disc organizer.
Materials:
fabric (a little more than a yard)
fusible tape
1/4" plywood or tempered Masonite
table saw (the craft store will also cut the wood for a small fee)
aluminum channel - 5/16" channel and 8 feet long
small screws or small nails about 3/4" long
wood glue
drill (equipped with a 1/16" bit)
hammer
picture frame wire or chain
Steps:
- Cut the wood to size. For the compact disc organizer, size each shelf about seven inches square.
- Decide how many shelves are desired and cut one extra piece for the top.
- Cut two pieces of the aluminum channel per shelf, including the top shelf.
- Cut the pieces to the depth of the shelf.
- Drill three holes into the edge of each piece of aluminum channel for nails or small screws.
- Cut the fabric to size. Depending on how many shelves are desired, the length of the fabric will vary. For a seven-inch-wide shelf, cut the fabric 15 inches wide. This allows the fabric to wrap around the shelf so the pattern is visible from both sides.
- Use the fusible tape to hem the cut fabric edges.
- Put the edges toward the back of the unit to hide the seams.
- Mark the fabric at each location where a shelf is desired. For example, for shelves five inches apart, make a mark every six inches.
- Use the aluminum channel to pinch the fabric onto the shelf.
- Insert the nails into the pre-drilled holes.
- Hammer the nails into the shelf.
- After all of the shelves are in place, trim the excess fabric from the aluminum channels.
- Attach the hanger to the top using picture frame wire or any other cording.
- Hang the shelf on a ceiling hook.
