Materials:
craft paper (substitute newspaper or a paper bag)
pencil
yard stick
12 eight-inch wood sticks, thin and sanded
double-backed tape
wood glue
5" x 8" rectangle from 1/2-inch thick pine board
hand saw
hammer and nails (optional)
white paint
sponge paintbrush
Steps for lattice: - Make a guide for constructing the lattice work by using a yard stick and pencil to draw an 11-inch horizontal line on the craft paper.
- Mark the center of the horizontal line at 5-1/2 inches.
- Draw a 14-inch vertical line intersecting the 5-1/2 inch mark of the horizontal line. Make certain to distribute 7 inches on either side of the horizontal line.
- Use the yard stick edge to draw straight lines connecting the horizontal and vertical ends together forming a diamond or kite shape on the paper. This is the lattice pattern.
- Place two long strips of double backed tape, side by side, across the diamond shape guide drawn on the paper. This tape will hold the wood pieces (forming the base of the lattice work) in place.
- Secure an eight-inch sanded wood strip along an inside edge of the diamond shape by laying it across both pieces of the double back tape, centering the wood across the guide as you go.
- Place a second eight-inch wood strip on the guide along the inside edge that on the opposite end from the first one.
- Place four more eight-inch wood strips side by side between the first two on the guide, centering and spacing each one an equal distance from the next. Since the strips are only secured by tape, spacing corrections can be made quickly and easily. This is the base layer of the lattice.
- Once the base layer of the lattice is ready, begin placing a second layer of wood strips crisscross on top of it. Use the two remaining inside edges of the diamond shape guide to position the first two outer strips.
- As before, place the remaining four wood strips between the two outer ones, spacing them an even distance from each other. The lattice pattern will be apparent when all the strips are in the correct position.
- Indicate the positioning of the top strips by lightly marking across the bottom layer with a pencil.
- Lift strips from the top layer one at a time and dab wood glue at each of the marks indicating where to re-position the strip.
- Reposition each strip on the glue dots and wipe off any excess glue and allow the glue to dry.
Steps for shelf assembly:
- Take the sharp edges off the front of the shelf by laying the 5" x 8" piece of pine board out horizontally on a flat surface. From the front right corner, measure and mark 2-3/4 inches along the edge to the left and to the right. Connect these marks by drawing a straight line from one to the other, forming a triangle shape at the corner of the board. Do the same thing on the left front corner.
- Use a hand saw to cut the triangles off each of the front corners and sand.
- Secure the shelf by gluing or, if using the shelf to display a heavier item, nailing (from the back) the uncut horizontal edge to the bottom section of the lattice.
- Sand the shelf completely and wipe the wood down with a damp cloth.
- Finish the project by using the paint and sponge brush to whitewash the shelf.
