Thanks to a variety of kits available in home improvement centers and hardware stores these days, glass shelves are easy to install and they add a great decorative touch for little cost. Kits should include brackets that have holes in the back for hanging, protective pads to place between the bracket and the shelf, and special toggle bolts that open in the wall for permanent, sturdy hanging.

With a measuring tape and a level, determine where the bolts will be inserted into the wall. Insert glass bracket screws that have spacers on them to keep them from being driven too far into the wall. Fit the brackets over the screws, and pull down to tighten.

Always use glass that is thick enough to be a sturdy shelf. Picture framing glass, for example, is much too weak to be used for this purpose. Place a protective pad on each bracket where it touches the shelf, and center the shelf on the brackets.
