When some of Ilona Saari's dish collection was shattered in an earthquake, she preserved the pieces in a mosaic backsplash. She shows Kitty Bartholomew how to create mosaics from shards of china.
Steps:
- Apply a layer of adhesive/grout (available in one product) to the surface to be covered. Create notches with a fork to help the tile grip better (figure A).
- Press full tiles in place to create a border. Fill cracks in with adhesive/grout and wipe excess off of tiles with a damp sponge.
- For the center, create the design out of broken pottery and china on another surface before putting it in place permanently.
- Put more adhesive/grout in the center (enough to get the main portion of the design in). Apply this layer more thickly than the border and do not create notches. Press the broken pieces in place, recreating the design (figure B). Fill in the outer edges of the inside section with broken tile in desired color(s).
- Apply tile/grout sealer for protection.
