Ocassionally, slate shingles on a roof needed to be replaced. Because slate is such a durable roofing material, cracked or damaged shingles can be replaced without the expense of replacing the entire roof.

Slate shingles come in a variety of colors, sizes, thicknesses and grades. The best part is that slate can have a life expectancy of 60 to 100 years, or more. Periodically, you should visually inspect your roof for cracked or missing shingles, especially after ice or windstorms.

If you see damaged shingles on the roof or broken shingles in the gutter or on the ground, chances are your roof needs repair. Stay off the roof! Call a professional; otherwise, you could damage some good shingles, and slate is very slippery. It's wise to get estimates from several roofing contractors on repair costs. Remember, a well-kept slate roof greatly enhances the value and appearance of your home.
