Home repair expert Henry Harrison shows a homeowner how to install a new downspout on his gutters and redirect water away from the house, where the leaks following heavy rains have caused some damage. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Tools:

power drill
twist bit
ratcheting screwdriver
nut drive attachment (to fit the sheet metal screws)
downspout connections (elbow attachments, sized to fit existing downspouts)
sheet metal screws
safety goggles

Steps:

1. Drill out the rivets connecting the old downspouts (figure A) and remove the fixtures. Be sure to always wear safety goggles when working with power tools.

2. Place elbow attachment into position (figure B). Make sure it's pointing out into the yard, away from the house.

3. Drill a pilot hole on each side of the elbow attachment. The holes should be the same size as the sheet metal screws you're using to hold the downspout together.

4. Drive sheet metal screws into pilot holes using the ratcheting screwdriver and the nut drive attachment (figure C).

5. Place the flexible drain attachment into position around the newly attached arm (figure D).

6. Repeat the same connecting procedure for the drain as for the arm. Aim the flexible spout so rainwater will flow away from the house.
