This expanse of lawn (above) is begging for some special attention. With the addition of a pond and waterfall (below), the yard now has a new focal point and a tropical air.

Materials and Tools:

flagstone
plastic liner
water pump kit
blue tumbled glass

measuring tape
water hose

Steps:

1. Before digging, make sure there are no power lines or pipes located in the area you will be digging. Then dig a hole to the size you wish your pond to be.

2. Lay a plastic liner inside the hole, extending the liner up and around the sides as well as around the surrounding area (figure A). This will make sure the water will stay in the hole and not drain into the ground.

3. Lay flagstone or any kind of rock over the liner that surrounds the hole. Then cover the bottom of the hole with rock to hide the liner. If you find you have too much liner, trim off the excess.

4. Now it's time to get creative with your pond by arranging the stones to your liking. For this project we added a water fountain feature. Stack the stone into a sloping mound at one end of the pond and run tubing underneath. Then attach the tubing to a water pump that will be placed inside the pond. Creating a pond with moving water allows it to remain clear and fresh longer.

5. Once everything is placed, fill as many holes and cracks with small stones as possible. Add water to the pond. Add more stones around the inside wall of the pond to hide all of the plastic liner.

6. Dress up your pond by adding water-based plants for a tropical-like oasis. For a shimmering effect, add tumbled blue glass rocks to the bottom.
