Chimney Caps

House Detective : Episode HDT-202 -- More Projects »
When a chimney doesn't have a chimney cap, it's vulnerable to all kinds of unwanted things getting in--and some things getting out, as well.

The main function of a chimney cap is to prevent rain and snow from penetrating the house and creating damage. But it also keeps debris, birds and animals from taking up residence inside the flue. It discourages downdrafts that can make fires hard to start or smoky, and the screen can stop sparks coming up from the fireplace--which is especially important if you have a wood-shingled roof.

If you need a chimney cap, the easiest thing to do is call a chimney sweep or fireplace contractor and have one installed. If you plan to do it yourself, carefully measure the flue opening and buy a cap that fits properly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation to avoid cracking the flue tile.

A sturdy chimney cap is a good investment and a good way to make sure nothing unwanted gets in or out of your fireplace.
