Handyman Darcy Westlind offers tips for making sure the exterior of the home is ready for cold weather.
- Open gaps, holes and cracks around pipes, exterior windows and door frames should be caulked (see photo). Look for openings where siding materials meet and caulk those as well.
- There are a few different caulking compounds that can be used on the exterior of a home. Oil or resin-based caulk, also known as contractor's caulk, is for exterior use only. Benefits include low cost and moderate shrinkage, but contractor's caulk only lasts for one to four years.
- Latex caulks are little more expensive but offer much longer durability--up to 10 years. Butyl rubber and silicone caulking compounds are also available, but are fairly pricey. They will last for 10 years or more.
- Expandable foam also works well for sealing larger openings.
- Make sure all storm doors and windows are closed, and replace any storm windows if necessary.
- Walk around the exterior of the home and seal any gaps or holes, especially around the eaves and overhangs.
- Place heavier screening over all external pipes, hoses or vents entering the home. Repair any cracks in foundations with ready-mix cement or heavy caulking material.
- Disconnect garden hoses and shut off the water valves.
- Remove any window air conditioners before cold weather arrives.
