Storm Blind Repair

Tools:

adjustable wrench
nut driver
flat-head screwdriver
hacksaw blade
needle-nose pliers
replacement mechanism, including handle
penetrating oil

Note: The steps could vary depending on the particular mechanism involved, and could well be different from those seen in this project. Always read the directions that come with replacement parts.

1. Remove the old crank hardware using pliers, nut-driver or other tool (figure A). If a nut is stuck, give it a few drops of penetrating oil to loosen it up.

2. Take the hardware to the blind store and find a suitable replacement. Take note of whether the mechanism mounts on the right or left side of the blinds.

3. Remove all the nuts on the new mechanism and slip it into place on the mounting plate, then tighten nuts to secure (figure B).

4. Next attach the actuator arm to the blind frame. If the blinds are fairly old, corrosion may have locked the nut and bolt together. Hold the nut with needle-nose pliers while sawing through the bolt with a hacksaw blade (figure C). The pliers will also come in handy for working a replacement bolt into place (figure D).

5. Slip the arm of the mechanism over the bolt and tighten the nut to secure (figure E).

6. Slide the knob into place and tighten retaining screw (figure F) and you're ready to enjoy the great outdoors.
