Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows a guest how to stop leaks and get a few more years of use out of his flat roof by applying a coat of fibered asphalt roof coating. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two.
Tools:
towels
broom
large stiff-bristled brush
4-inch bristle brush
kneepads
work gloves
eye protection
rope
odorless mineral sprits
fibered roof coating
Steps:
1. Sweep and clean roof area thoroughly (figure A).
2. Put on the work gloves and kneepads and apply asphalt coating, starting at the edges (figure B). Use the small brush to get into any tight areas where the large brush cannot fit. Be generous when spreading the coating.
3. Now just pour out a fat glob of the coating and start spreading it using the large stiff-bristled brush (figure C). Be sure to use a brush designed for spreading asphalt roof coating. Remember to leave yourself an escape route, whether it's inside through a second-story window or down to ground level.
4. When you're finished with the asphalt roof goop, tie a rope to the handle and gently lower it to the ground (figure D). You really don't want to carry this bucket through the house.
5. Continue spreading until the roof is covered and you've worked yourself into a corner at your escape route (figure E).
6. Once you're off the roof, spread the coating over the last bit of area (figure F).
7. The coating should provide two to three years more life to your roof.
