Final Touches

Renovations : Episode REN-213 -- More Projects »
After a look back at the renovations from the previous shows, host Barte Shadlow meets with the contractor while work continues on the outdoor cedar deck. The decking has been laid using biscuits installed between the cedar boards for a hidden fastening technique, and the stairs leading from the deck to the backyard are built the same way. The kitchen remodeling continues with the installation of custom-made cabinetry made of cherry wood.

A template of the cabinets is taken to get the exact measurements for the countertops. The surface material is rough cut and the loose pieces are joined together using a mirror seam technique. Once the countertop pieces have been joined, the template is traced and cut roughly to size. Then the countertops are trimmed to the correct size, sanded, edge detailed and brought on site for installation.

Some of the home's original baseboard heaters have been relocated to areas inside the new additions and additional baseboard heaters are installed. Steps are built to accommodate level changes between the old and new part of the living room addition. The old flooring is cut away and the stair is boxed out. Hardwood flooring will match the old floor to the new for a uniform look.

Fixtures are installed in the relocated powder room. The owner opted to have the powder room vanity custom made to match the kitchen cabinets and countertops, blending the new addition with the rest of the house. Back in the kitchen, the backslash tiles are installed to complete the room's remodeling.
