Steps:

1. Determine the height at which you want to install your shelves and mark it on the wall (figure A).

2. Measure the same distance a few feet away (or longer, depending on how long your shelves are) and snap a chalk line between the two points (figure B). Use a level to make sure the line is plumb.

3. Use a stud finder and mark the studs along the chalk line.

4. Measure the distance from the top of the brackets to the center of the lower mounting hole (figure C). Cut a piece of trim to that length, and use it to mark where you need to pre-drill the lower mounting holes.

5. Hold one end of the trim to the chalk line, and mark the spot on the wall (or studs if they're exposed) for the lower hole (figure D). Pre-drill pilot holes.

6. Attach brackets to the wall (figure E). Place board on brackets, making sure the load is centered on the brackets.

7. Drill pilot holes in underside of shelf (figure F). Make sure to mark the drill so you do not go too far into the shelf and come out on the other side.

8. Insert screws into shelves. Use a manual screwdriver as it offers better control and you'll be less likely to strip the screws.

9. Give the shelf a tug to make sure it's secure and you're done.
