French Drain

House Detective : Episode HDT-106 -- More Projects »
Got the wet basement blues? A French drain might take care of the problem. But what is a French drain and how do you know if you need one?

A French drain collects water before it gets to the basement or foundation of the house. This type of perforated tubing is placed in a gravel-lined trench. Water collects in the tube and is directed away from the house. However, this type of drain can eventually become clogged.

Before you let anyone talk you into installing a French drain, get a couple of expert opinions from licensed contractors. Re-grading the soil around your house may be all that's necessary. Make sure the gutters and downspouts are directing the water away from your house, too--all of these things will help keep your basement dry.

Drying out a wet basement may require more than just a single approach, but before you start spending lots of money, make sure you investigate all of the available options.
