Stylish Smaller Nest
Before & After : Episode BAA-1208 -- More Projects »
Host Pat Simpson tours the complete remodel of a 1960s brick ranch outside of Chicago. The homeowners are recent empty nesters and wanted to downsize from their larger dream house, so they bought a small ranch home. Their new home was outdated and needed to be modernized. They also wanted to incorporate design elements that would make the home suitable for them well into their senior years while maintaining the warmth of the home.
Architect Ray Hartshorne's design added a new second floor to the home, enhancing the exterior character and adding storage space inside. The exterior was also refinished and features full brick with stylish accents in a European style. The main floor rooms were oriented toward the back of the home, taking advantage of the lot. The warmth of the home was preserved through subtle lighting and colorful spaces. A highlight of the remodel is the great room with 25-foot ceilings.
