A standard 1930s tract home gets remade into a traditional Southern style beauty, inspired by the New Orleans Garden District.Homeowners Brian and La Preal Moore want to bring their Southern heritage to the curb, with a design by Kem Thelig that incorporates the French fleur-de-lis. Landscape designer Daniel Owens contributes traditional southern plants and flowers for the new garden. The project is tied together with the use of vivid paint color and a combination of custom-made and pre-fabricated steelwork.
Here's how they accomplish it:
- remove old lawn and a strip of concrete in the driveway where new grass will go
- porch gets rebuilt for a more open feel
- warm beige paint for the body of the house, black trim and shutters, and a red door
- Install new carriage style garage door
- concrete walk and steps get resurfaced with the look of cobblestone
- cast iron fence, gate, and balcony with fleur de lis design goes up
- a wooden fence get installed to block off a private side-yard
- new lawn and plants, including a persimmon, magnolia, and smoke tree as well as low growing rose bushes for color and fragrance
- gray basalt bricks line the planting beds and create edging
- the final touches: a garden bench, classical urns for flowers, hand-stenciled house numbers, and reproduction houselights of old French fixtures
