Mediterranean Makeover

Curb Appeal : Episode CRB-613 -- More Projects »
Homeowners Christina and Andrew Marks know their home has a bright Spanish-Mediterranean architectural style. The problem is many of the classic elements of the style were stripped by the previous owner and the landscaping lacks any unity to the space. The Marks want to bring back classic elements of their home's style and create an enclosed area in their yard, complete with Mediterranean flair. They've asked designer Laurie Callaway to assist in bringing out their home's true style.

After the makeover.

Callaway begins her makeover of the Marks' home by bringing in classic Spanish -Mediterranean elements. Here's how she does it:

  • Builds a low stucco wall, set back from the street--setting the stage for the yard's new enclosed area.
  • Lays Spanish terra-cotta and decorative tiles on the porch and new front walkway, matching the terra cotta tiles already present on the roof.
  • Adds a new front door in carved wood and wrought iron.
  • Plants the new yard in dramatic layers with classic plants of the area--rosemary, lavender, formium, roses, grasses and a lemon tree.
  • Repaints the trim in an apricot color to lessen the modern look of the new windows and new stain on the driveway gate.
  • Adds custom, wrought iron window boxes and gates.
  • Adds colorful containers, a wood bench for the yard and a birdbath.

Virtual makeover

Callaway utilizes a virtual makeover software program to complete the Spanish look at the Marks' home with elements they might want to incorporate in the future. Here's what she envisions:

  • Exchanging the modern casement windows with classic arched windows.
  • Placing a pergola over the porch, providing shade and a spot for colorful plants.
  • Repainting the house a baked earth siena shade.
  • Facing the driveway in aggregate squares and adding wrought iron elements to the driveway gate.
  • Replacing the decorative planter at the center of the home with a working fountain.
