Wooden Arbor Entryway

Curb Appeal : Episode CRB-603 -- More Projects »
Homeowner and landscape designer Dan Berger and his family have lived in a tract home for years. While the home's spacious yard and interior space has been ideal for raising a family, its exterior lacks a sense of individuality. Berger wants to give his home a unique flavor with rustic elements that will also draw the home into balance with its landscape. He has asked architect Vaughan Trammell to assist in creating this sense of unity.

The Makeover

Trammell begins his transformation of the Berger home right at the home's front entry. Here's how he did it:

  • Demolished existing overhang replacing with an open-air arbor, leaving only cover for the front door area.
  • Covered the modern metal garage door with sliding garage doors designed with a rustic finish.
  • Gave the facade a face lift with a new paint job in olive green and dark brown stain--earth colors that ground the home into its surroundings.
  • Created a curved path of flagstone that wanders from the sidewalk to the front door.
  • Marked out a garden seating area accessible by a gravel walkway.
  • Added southwestern, drought-resistant shrubs, trees and flowers to the surrounding planting beds--pulling together the house and landscape.
  • Added copper fixtures, rustic chairs and earthen red pots filled with desert plants to the front porch.

The Virtual Makeover

Architect Vaughn Trammell used a computer software program to take this makeover to the next level--a virtual design for the house that the owners might want to incorporate at a later date.

Trammell uses a computer software program to take this makeover to the next level, a virtual design for the house that the owners might want to incorporate at a later date. Here's what he envisions:

  • Installing new cedar shingle siding that emphasizes the unique rustic style.
  • Replacing the living room window with French doors that open onto the new front yard and seating area.
  • Adding a dry creek bed that runs through the yard, completing the southwestern feel of the landscape.
  • Replacing the current asphalt shingles with gray-green slate shingles, completing the warm earthy color palate of the Berger's virtually designed home.
