Matt Fox shares this information when building an addition so that it lasts for years:
  • Make sure to use only pressure treated wood for the framing and that the wall surfaces are water resistant and durable yet attractive. The latter can be accomplished with medium density fiberboard grooved with a 5/8-inch repeat just like regular bead board.
  • Large framing posts that aren't twisted or cracked can be hard to find so manufacturers now make a parallel strand lumber (PSL) post, which is a high strength structural composite lumber product made by gluing strands of wood together under pressure(figure A). They are very stable (they won't warp, twist or split)and use wood more efficiently with less waste.
