Building With Steel

Steel is now considered a viable alternative to traditional building materials. Unlike wood, steel is termite-proof and won't warp in humid climates -- it also meets any wind or seismic code. The fact that 70 percent of all steel produced in the U.S. is made from recycled materials is "a great selling point for home buyers concerned about the environment," says Mark Mengel, president of Crown Building Systems. Steel also fits the budget of most projects. Its only drawback is the cost of teaching builders how to work with the material.
