Balancing Act

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-908 -- More Projects »
Nestled high in the hills of Studio City, California, sits a four-story futuristic house that looks like a cross between a spaceship and a Rolodex. Conceived by Portland-based architect, Robert Oshtaz and builder/owner Larry Stevens, the home is designed to be "standing work of art."

Built on a tree-covered, up-slope site with panoramic views of the San Fernando Valley offered challenges that sparked creative solutions. For instance, a cantilevered living room hovers 40 feet high, giving one the feeling of floating in space. The 'soaring' room is flanked by exterior fin-like projections, which prevent utility poles and lines from spoiling the spectacular view, while simultaneously heightening the drama of the structure. Meet the architect, builder and interior designer of this ultra-custom home to learn what gave rise to this tree-topping house that seemingly defies both traditional design theories and gravity.
