When builder Lee Butz and his wife decided they were ready for a new home, they didn't have to look far to find help getting it built. One of their sons is a builder and the other son is an architect. They presented their parents with a design that made their mother a little nervous: a giant concrete "cube" that certainly wouldn't look like any other house on the street.
To build the home, huge sections of cast concrete were fashioned by a bridge-building company and hauled to the site on tractor trailers. The home was assembled on the spot. The finished design is a cool, streamlined structure that's warmed by light pouring in through floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Abundant trees and automatic shades provide privacy. A favorite room is the home theater, which boasts a 7' x 14' screen, specially designed acoustics and a projector made by IMAX. We'll talk to the sons about the special challenges of constructing a concrete home, see photos of the remarkable building process and find out exactly how mom and dad feel about the unconventional home their boys created.
