Quarry Living

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-910 -- More Projects »
Architect Hal Reed knew he'd struck gold when his central Florida clients unveiled the abandoned limerock mine they intended to live beside. Instead of the hilltop home they had originally envisioned, Reed convinced his clients to build their home underground.

Though the twelve acres of ravines and lush vegetation appeared to be the perfect location to carve a private paradise, building twenty feet below ground was no simple feat. Slippery clay and tight quarters meant that flexible and lightweight wood would be the best to build with. The resulting home is a marvelous combination of cozy passages and explosive views that is a cinch to heat and cool. Special features include an elevator for easy access, a pool and guesthouse, and an indoor waterfall.
