New Modern

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-909 -- More Projects »
Architect Martin Crossman loved the look and feel of his San Diego community, but he and his wife wanted a home that was more unique. While some of neighbors have chosen to tear down and rebuild, Martin decided to renovate and build up. Thus began the metamorphosis of his 50's ranch house to a sleek, modern design.

First, Martin took advantage of the home's "good bones," hardwood floors, plank and beam ceilings and plaster walls. Then he began to create a second-story addition inspired by the designs of architects Wright, Schindler and Neutra. The most unique feature is a "shower tower" that looks over the neighborhood. His wife feared "overexposure ," but it's actually very private. The addition also features such elements as sleeping decks, porches and window bays. The result is a home that reconnects with the street , the sky and the garden with a design that reflects innovation with a nod to its past.
