Figure A--Conservatories came about to protect exotic plants from harsh British winters. Now they are unique, sunny living spaces. Mary Spalding designed this one to serve as a home-away-from-home by the pool. It is a place for four to six people to have cocktails or a morning brunch. She had orange trees brought in because they are dramatic yet perfect in an interior that is dominated by sunlight.

Figure B--The interior of this conservatory is more than four times larger than that of the first. It is also attached to the main dwelling, so there is already a great deal of furniture available. Spalding went with wicker furniture to encompass the true feeling of a conservatory and to give the room a separate identity. Entertaining large groups takes the focus here.
