Driving through the Colorado Rockies, one would never guess the area had something in common with Northern England. But high on a stony perch outside of town stands a house modeled after "Craglough," Lord Armstrong's 19th century home near Rothbury, England. The modern-day house belongs to Bill and Joyce Carpenter. Joyce grew up in England, often and visited "Craglough" when she was young.
Years later, she and Bill traveled to Colorado and were struck by its similarities to Rothbury. They bought property and decided to build a house similar to Craglough. They chose David Elfring as their architect and Bill Vickroy as their builder. David used the rocky landscape as his inspiration for the 38-foot high fortress-like home. He used stone, wood and stucco on the exterior to give it ancient feel. The inside is done in plaster with wood beams and stone accents for a bright and sunny feel.
There are also rustic Colorado touches. The same rocky side that inspired David also challenged Bill Vickroy. It took weeks to blast away rock for the foundation and utility lines. The weather was also an issue. One winter visit was made by snowmobile. But today its complete with an inviting collection of spaces, including the master suite tower.
