Moonlight Basin Lodge

Montana is known for its mountain lodges and ranches. But not everyone wants the responsibility of maintaining a large home on a wide, open space. Take the Shafers. They wanted to live under the big sky near Bozeman, but they didn't want any worries. They found their answer at Moonlight Basin. This massive stone lodge sits on a 25-thousand acre ranch. It includes four privately owned penthouses ranging from 2600 to 3000 square feet in size. (Yes, luxury condos in rural Montana.)

Built by partners Lee Poole and Joe Vujovich and designed by architect Jerry Locati, the lodge itself is framed in wood and steel to support the large expanses of space. Exposed trusses and beams add to the drama. The Shafers' penthouse has three bedrooms, three baths, full kitchen, spacious loft and a two-story living room and dining room. The design emphasizes handcrafted log accents that combine rustic Montana flavor with unabashed luxury. Large decks offer ski-in/ski-out access and breathtaking views of Lone Mountain and the Spanish Peaks. Here, lodge managers cater to the Shafers every need, while the couple enjoys the ski slopes and other various amenities.
