When Valerie and Craig Dykstra decided to build a home, they wanted a place where they could play, exercise and entertain as a family. Working with architect Jon Hensley and builder Charles Priem, they constructed a contemporary structure with Craftsman-like details. The exterior is covered in wood and stone with a hand-crimped steel roof. Inside, from the stone surfaces to the wood finishes, everything appears to be one-of-a-kind.
While simple in style, Priem says it was a challenging structure to build. The couple also worked with interior designer Walter Gagliano, who understood their casual, family-oriented lifestyle. Together they came up with a number of interesting concepts, including a music room with a curved ceiling finished in silver leaf, a slide from the kitchen to the downstairs playroom and a glass-enclosed spiral staircase to a large roof deck. The home also features its own racquetball court that's convenient to the outdoor terrace and pool.
