Host Kathi Cardinalli explains how to make a sleek, modern side table
(figure A).
Materials:
birch plywood table round
birch plywood table legs
medium-grit sandpaper
soft rag
gel wood stain
sponge brush
high-gloss or matte-finish paint
artist's brush
drill
Steps:
- A trip to the home-supply or lumber store is in order because you can purchase the table round and legs without having to cut them yourself (figure B).
- Once you have the wood, give the pieces a good once-over with sandpaper and dust off with a soft rag.
- Apply stain with a sponge brush (figure C). The gel will go on thick, with the appearance of paint, but wipe away the excess with a rag before it sets in too long. Wiping up quickly will give you leeway on making decisions, such as how much you might want to apply. You may find that one coat will be plenty. Do NOT stain the table edge.
- Once the top and legs are complete, it's time to paint the table edge. Use an artists' brush to paint the edge because the sponge brush may overlap on top (figure D).
- Measure out from the center of the table to an even distance for all three legs (figure E). The legs will come with the hardware necessarily to screw them in. Use a drill to make things easier when installing the sockets that receive the legs.
