Problem: Most people would like to own a one-of-a-kind functional unique
antique, but the price tag is usually steep.
Solution: Restoring an older piece of furniture and turning it into
something useful creates a sense of personal satisfaction as well as a unique antique.
1. Determine a sink and a piece of furniture to use together. Pick out a sink
you like and then choose a piece of furniture that the sink will fit in. The typical
sink height is about 32" high, but the height can be adjusted.
2. Mark for placement of the sink. Use the template that comes with the sink to
determine where the sink will be placed (figure A). Measure and mark so that
the template is centered on the furniture top. Trace around the template onto the
furniture top to create an outline for the sink.
3. Remove any drawers or other accessories, which might interfere with cutting
the top (figure B).
4. Use a drill with a 3/8" bit to drill a pilot hole somewhere within the
outline of the sink (figure C).
* Always wear safety goggles when using
drilling or cutting tools.
5. Use a jigsaw to cut through the furniture top. Start with the jigsaw blade
in the pilot hole and cut around the outline (figure D). Apply masking tape
to the bottom of the jigsaw to prevent it from marring the furniture.
6. Use a hole saw to cut holes for the water supply lines and drain as appropriate
for the installation (figure E). Depending on the installation, the supply
line and drain might come from either the wall or the floor.
7. Remove the drawer front from the drawer box by whatever means necessary. Be
careful not to damage the drawer front because it will be reattached to the furniture.
8. Attach support pieces (scrap wood) inside the cabinet in the opening for the
drawer. The support pieces will help hold the drawer front in place.
9. Place the drawer front in its original position, and secure it from behind
with screws (figure F). Drive the screws through the support pieces
and into the back of the drawer front. Be careful not to drive the screws all the
way through the drawer front.
10. Attach the new faucet to the new sink according to the manufacturer's instructions.
11. Run a bead of caulk on the furniture top approximately 1/4" from the
edge of the cut opening. Then drop the sink into place.
12. Set the unit in place and make the appropriate plumbing connections to the
main lines.
