Figure C
Host Renai Ellison shows how to make a charming side table with white-picket fencing and a sheet of tabletop glass to create a garden or cottage-style look for any room.

Materials:

sections of wooden picket fencing (available at home-improvement stores)
electric palm sander
latex paint in color of choice
foam paintbrush
"L" brackets
screws
stencils of choice
acrylic paint in color of choice
repositionable adhesive
piece of tabletop glass
drill

Steps:

  1. Cut lengths of fencing to the size and height you want the table to be.

  2. If wood is unfinished, lightly sand with an electric palm sander (figure A) .

  3. Paint or wash wood (figure B) with the color of your choice. (A whitewash of half paint and half water was used on the show.) Let dry.

  4. Attach fencing pieces together with brackets, screws and a drill to create a square or rectangular base.

  5. If desired, stencil flowers, vines, etc. with acrylic paint (figure C). Secure stencil with repositionable adhesive before painting.

  6. Top with a piece of tabletop glass.

Tips

  • Use a sponge brush to apply paint or wash onto the edges of the fence to make sure you get plenty of paint in all the crevices.

  • If whitewashing, apply with a brush, then wipe with a cloth to remove excess paint and give the fence a very subtle hint of color.
