Home repair expert Henry Harrison uses some simple tools and techniques to help a homeowner repair her water-damaged deck chairs. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job an easy one.

Tools:

dust mask
safety glasses
putty knife or 5-in-1 painters tool
sandpaper (medium grit)
spray primer
paintbrush
painting tray
wrought-iron paint roller
foam brushes
exterior paint

Steps:

1. Remove chair pads so they will not get damaged.

2. Next put on a dust mask and safety goggles and scrape the chipped areas with the putty knife or painters tool (figure A).

3. Use the sandpaper to help smooth and blend in the damaged areas (figure B). Sand until you can run your fingers over the surface of the chair and not feel the difference between painted and bare areas.

4. Wipe down the surface to remove dirt and dust.

5. Spot-prime the exposed areas with a spray primer, holding the can about six to eight inches from the surface (figure C).

6. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions then apply a topcoat of waterproof exterior paint. Use the wrought-iron roller to quickly and evenly coat spindles (figure D).
