Custom Platform Bed

Steve Watson and his team visit Steve and Lisa Bandler. The Bandlers have several lingering projects including a dividing wall in the children’s room and a platform bed frame with nightstands.

Below is a summary of steps, as well as a list of tools and materials used, as seen in platform-bed project.

Tools:

table saw
power miter box
finish nailer
air compressor with hoses
jig saw
cordless drill with battery and magnetic screw tip
measuring tape
pencil
safety glasses

materials:

sheets 3/4" birch plywood (2 sheets)
1x4x6 #1 pine (10)
hinges (8)
handles (4)

The platform for the bed has the bonus benefit of providing additional storage.
Steps:

1. Measure the mattress you'll be using to ensure proper dimensions for the bed frame.

2. Using the table saw, cut 14" strips of plywood for the bed sides. You'll need 6 strips.

3. Cut door holes using the jigsaw. Cut access holes in the sides of the bedframe for access to the storage space underneath.

4. Assemble the bed frame in the room. (Otherwise, the structure won't fit through the door.) Secure the elements together using 2-inch drywall screws.

5. Prime and paint.

6. Add the door hinges and handles, and install the doors.
