Master carpenter Michael O'Brien has spent six years of his weekends and after-business hours building and detailing his 3,000-square-foot house and studio. A transplant from the Midwest, O'Brien is a fan of anything to do with a tropical climate. And his home reflects his passion--carved wood fish hang from the 21-foot-high ceiling of his eight-sided "palm" room.

Palm-leaf shapes are carved into the ceiling, while posts going up the sides of these walls represent tree trunks. Hand-carved corbels decorate the living room and kitchen ceilings, while a massive sandstone fireplace--hand-carved by O'Brien--graces the living room.
