Concrete slab floors don't have to be gray and dreary. Pat and Jodi show how to prepare and paint a concrete floor.
Prepare the Floor
- We used a wire brush attached to a drill to remove the last stubborn stains. If your concrete is less than a year old, you'll need to clean and seal the surface . If it is older, clean the surface and repair any cracks. You could also incorporate the cracks into your pattern if you choose.
- We continued cleaning the concrete by scraping out all of the old caulking using a putty knife.
- Our next step was to prime the surface with a primer sealer, applying it with a roller.
Color the Floor
After our primer was completely dry we were ready to apply our color. We began by cutting in the perimeter of our concrete slab with a paint brush and then used the roller to speed up the painting of the rest of the slab. It will take about four hours for this paint to completely dry, so we want to make sure that no on tries to use the front door during this time. Be sure to read your manufacturer's directions for drying times and any other directions you may need to be aware of.
* Here's a good tip: If you are thinking about laying a new concrete floor or a patio, consider adding a cement color to your cement mix. These are available in a variety of colors and will offer a more interesting look to any concrete floor .
