Concrete Floors
Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-730 -- More Projects » Tips:
- Determine if the concrete floor has been sealed. Tape the corners of a small piece of aluminum foil on the floor and leave it for about 24 hours. Peel back foil and if there is moisture underneath, this means it hasn't been sealed causing the floor to be cold, damp and musty.
- When building a home, avoid moisture in concrete by asking the builder for a water stop, which goes between the concrete slab and the foundation. This prevents moisture from the outside from expanding into the concrete.
- Look on the back of the sealer can for a toll-free technical support number to call regarding concrete floor questions.
- When decorating, don't use any flooring with a wood backing; however, the new plastic laminates work well on concrete. Glue carpet directly to floor (low-nap is best).
- Perhaps the best flooring for a basement is ceramic tile. Be sure to select one with traction.
- Decorate unsealed concrete by dipping a sponge or string mop into paint (use two colors) and dab onto floor for a faux-finish.
