Concrete surrounding a pool was stained for a faux granite look.
Forty-year-old concrete might take $7,000 to replace, so designer Edward Turrentine and concrete expert Marshall Barabasch came up with an inexpensive way to paint the concrete so it would look old in a good way--like aged granite, with tiles in geometric patterns. These are the steps they followed:
  1. Measure the space and draw the patterns you want directly on the concrete. Make sure the patterns have straight lines, sharp angles, and are proportional.
  2. Cut a thin groove around the shapes, using safety glasses and a decorative saw with concrete blade, as shown.
  3. For the color, give the concrete a transparent color wash.
    • Use a water-based product.
    • Wear gloves.
    • Pour the color wash (in this case terra cotta) into an old wash bucket.
    • Dab a regular paintbrush in the wash, being careful not to get "too many drips," says Barabasch. You can also use a sponge or rags, but a brush is best for beginners.
    • Start painting on the wash in a straight line, then move to a circular motion as shown. Work quickly, because the wash dries almost immediately and you don't want visible brush marks.
  4. Let the surface dry for a few hours before applying another color to a nearby area.
  5. The color-washed concrete will be ready to seal the next day.

Kemiko Stone Tone Stains are not a paint. They react with the concrete to form permanent, long lasting colors that will not fade, chip or peel. These stains actually react with the cement particles and last as long as the surface they have been applied to.
