Home repair expert Henry Harrison shares some tips for dealing with loose carpeting on stairs, a potentially dangerous situation. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

new tack strip or grip strip

Steps:

1. Pull back the loose carpet so you can get to the tack strips (figure A).

2. Pry up the old tack strips (figure B).

3. Use the old tack strip as a template and cut the new tack strips to fit using aviator snips (figure C). (You can also measure for the new strip and cut it using a saw.)

4. Nail the new tack strips in place, spacing nails every 6 to 8 inches.

5. Fold the carpet back over the new strips.

6. Tighten the carpet using the knee kicker tool to stretch it back over the new tack strip (figure D).

7. Tuck the seam of the carpet down behind the strip using a tucking tool (figure E).

8. Make sure you kick and tuck all the way around the section you're working on, tightening the carpet as you go.

9. Re-tuck any edges that need it.
