Pat Niehaus, aka "the Wall Doctor," shows how to give new life to an old room by adding the warmth of brick with a faux fireplace. It's easy enough to do in a weekend.
Materials:
grout-colored paint
1/2- or 1/4-inch masking tape
white joint compound
paint tint or regular acrylic paint in brick color
wide plastic spatula
paintbrushes
acrylic paint in yellow, brown and gray-white
kitchen sponge
black tint
clear acrylic paint
Steps:
- Prime the wall with grout-colored paint.
- Put tape on the wall to mark the shape of the bricks, removing every other vertical one to create an offset pattern.
- Mix white joint compound with paint tint or regular acrylic paint to make a brick color.
- Apply to the wall, covering tape, and let dry. Pat wet paint with a wide plastic spatula to give the wall texture.
- Peel off the tape while the compound is still wet.
- Using watered-down brick-colored acrylic paint to cover the whole wall--grout lines and all.
- Go back and wipe most of the color off the lines.
- Sponge a little bit of watered-down acrylic paint in yellow, brown and gray-white over the bricks to give texture.
- Use the edge of a kitchen sponge to put a little black tint on grout lines and bricks.
- After the wall dries, apply a coat of clear acrylic paint for durability.
