Faux Fireplace Bricks

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-351 -- More Projects »
Pat Niehaus, aka "the Wall Doctor," shows how to give new life to an old room by adding the warmth of brick with a faux fireplace. It's easy enough to do in a weekend.

Materials:

grout-colored paint
1/2- or 1/4-inch masking tape
white joint compound
paint tint or regular acrylic paint in brick color
wide plastic spatula
paintbrushes
acrylic paint in yellow, brown and gray-white
kitchen sponge
black tint
clear acrylic paint

Steps:

  1. Prime the wall with grout-colored paint.

  2. Put tape on the wall to mark the shape of the bricks, removing every other vertical one to create an offset pattern.

  3. Mix white joint compound with paint tint or regular acrylic paint to make a brick color.

  4. Apply to the wall, covering tape, and let dry. Pat wet paint with a wide plastic spatula to give the wall texture.

  5. Peel off the tape while the compound is still wet.

  6. Using watered-down brick-colored acrylic paint to cover the whole wall--grout lines and all.

  7. Go back and wipe most of the color off the lines.

  8. Sponge a little bit of watered-down acrylic paint in yellow, brown and gray-white over the bricks to give texture.

  9. Use the edge of a kitchen sponge to put a little black tint on grout lines and bricks.

  10. After the wall dries, apply a coat of clear acrylic paint for durability.
