A rotted chimney chase must be replaced. Fortunately, its a problem that can be avoided with some preventive maintenance.
The chimney chase is a decorative surrounding that covers the metal flue inside the chimney. Its usually made of wood or metal and over time can rot or rust. Once the chase goes, water and small animals like mice and birds have easy access into the chase and into the house.
Here are some tips on making sure an aging chase doesnt keep you on the run.
- Check the flashing at the bottom of the chase where it meets the roof. That flashing should be directing water toward the gutters and away from the chase.
- Keep the chase clear of leaves and debris. They can enter the chase and cause a fire hazard.
- Check the chase pan cover annually for wear and tear.
- A chimney chase can be very elegant and less expensive than a masonry chimney, but it also requires a little more work to maintain.
