Home repair expert Henry Harrison guides a homeowner through the process of replacing an outdoor electrical outlet with a light fixture. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this project a one.

Tools:

circuit tester
screwdriver
wire stripper
caulking gun
hairdryer
towel
light fixture
caulk
wire nuts

Steps:

1. First find out if a switch on the inside controls the outlet. Plug the hairdryer (or similar small appliance) into the outlet and flip nearby switches.

2. Turn off the power at the main circuit breaker. Test the outlet with the circuit tester to make sure the juice is off.

3. Remove the outlet plate, pull the outlet from the recess and disconnect power supply wires (figure A).

4. Thread the wires through the mounting bracket and attach bracket to the wall using screws (figure B).

5. Snip off the exposed wires, then use the wire stripper to remove about 1/2-inch of insulation from each wire (figure C).

6. Attach the ground wire to one of the screws securing the mounting bracket, then connect power wires to corresponding wires coming from the house. Connect securely with wire nuts (figure D).

7. Stuff the wires behind the mounting plate of the light fixture, then attach plate to the bracket using screws.

8. Put a light bulb in the fixture, turn the power back on and test the light. If all works well, caulk around the edge of the mounting plate to provide protection from the elements (figure E).
