Home repair expert Henry Harrison helps a homeowner replace corroded outdoor light fixtures. Harrison also advises using fixtures specially designed to cope with the elements. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, he gives this job a two.

Tools:

flathead screwdriver
electrical tester

Steps:

1. Shut off electricity to the fixture at the breaker box.

2. Remove screws on cover of fixture, and remove to reveal the bracket that actually holds the fixture to the wall (figure A). Use the electrical tester to make sure the power is off.

3. Disconnect wiring, and make one more safety check with the tester. It's a lot of checking, but you can never be too careful when it comes to dealing with electricity.

4. Attach new bracket and connect wiring to new fixture. Attach fixture to bracket, put in a light bulb, turn power back on and test fixture.

5. Run a bead of caulk around the seam between the wall and base of fixture for maximum foul weather protection.
