California Furnace Woes

House Detective : Episode HDT-804 -- More Projects »
Engaged couple Fran Helms and Steve Mazzeo bought a 1961 modern in Costa Mesa, Calif., to begin their new life together. But they bought it "as is" without an inspection and they're starting to sing the blues. They’re hoping home inspector Rick Yerger can help them live happily ever after.

Inspector's Notebook
The house detective in Costa Mesa discovered a very dangerous hazard involving the home's furnace. A crack in the combustion chamber could have allowed deadly carbon monoxide gas to seep into the home. The only solution is a costly new furnace.

The risk of carbon monoxide gas leaks is why it’s so important to have your furnace inspected once a year by professionals. They can find problems before they become dangerous. But in between annual checkups, here are a few things you can do to stay on top of those burning furnace issues.

  • Replace the air filter regularly and keep the fan compartment door tightly sealed. That way the furnace won’t have to work as hard.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the furnace for burned or damaged wiring. Have damaged wiring repaired as soon as possible.
  • Make sure the furnace flue is connected securely to the masonry or metal utility flue. A leak could allow carbon monoxide gas to escape.

Keeping your furnace well maintained cuts the risk of carbon monoxide problems and can save as much as 10 percent a year on your heating costs.
