Heat Pumps

House Detective : Episode HDT-202 -- More Projects »
Have you been wondering what a heat pump is and what to look for in a new one?

A heat pump is a reversible air conditioner. In the summer, the pump collects heat from the house and vents it outside. In the winter, the pump pulls heat from the outside air and circulates it inside the house. Of course, there has to be some heat outside in the first place--that's why a heat pump works best in regions where winter temperatures generally stay above 30 degrees.

If you are in the market for a new heat pump, be sure to check with a reliable contractor for the appropriate size you'll need. Have them check your ductwork; heat pump systems generally require larger duct sizes than other central heating systems . Select a heat pump with a low sound rating--it'll make less racket.

A heat pump is the most efficient form of electric heating available for moderate climates. If that describes your part of the country and you want to cut your power bills, a heat pump is worth considering.
