Home repair expert Henry Harrison shows a guest how to replace the timing mechanism on an attic fan. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Tools:

new timing mechanism
voltage tester
Phillips-head screwdriver
flat-head screwdriver

Steps:

1. Turn off the power at the breaker.

2. Remove the attic fan timer handle and cover plate. Double-check the switch with the voltage detector to make sure the power is indeed off (figure B). Make sure the tester is working by testing it in a hot outlet.

3. Remove the screws holding the timer mechanism in place and take it out (figure C). Disconnect the electrical connections on the back of the mechanism and toss it.

4. Test fit the new switch and make any adjustments necessary.

5. Attach the new timer to the existing wires according to the manufacturer's instructions.

6. Attach the timer to the mounting bracket in the original box that's already mounted inside the wall.

7. Replace the cover plate and the knob (figure D).

8. Turn the power back on and test the timer.
