Replace A Thermostat

Home repair expert Henry Harrison shares a project for replacing a home thermostat. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this project a one.

Tools:

putty knife
safety goggles
power drill
flat-head screwdriver
Phillips-head screwdriver
level
wire cutters
pen
tape
replacement programmable thermostat (with batteries and wall anchors)

Steps:

1. First turn off power to the heating and air system. Next, use the putty knife to pop the cover off the old thermostat.

2. Before disconnecting anything, label the wires so you know which ones go where on the new thermostat (figure A). Use pieces of tape, or the adhesive labels that come included with most replacement thermostats.

3. Disconnect wires and then loosen screws holding the base to the wall. Be sure to secure the wires so they do not accidentally fall into the wall.

4. Take the mounting plate for your new thermostat and thread the wires through the back, then hold it into position against the wall and check that it's level (figure B). Mark the drill points on the wall.

5. Put on safety glasses and drill holes for mounting screws. Use plastic anchors if mounting the thermostat to drywall. Insert screws and tighten.

6. Strip some insulation from wires if necessary and attach to appropriate terminals on new thermostat (figure C).

7. Turn power to system back on, snap faceplate in place and set new thermostat to the desired comfort level.
