Crab-Orchard Stone Table
Our Place : Episode OPL-362 -- More Projects »
Host Kathi Cardinalli explains how to fashion a terrific garden table from a large piece of crab-orchard stone and a metal base (figure A, below).
Materials:
slab of stone
piece of metal pipe that has threads at each end
metal pipefittings, both elbow and T-joints
metal flanges
self-sticking plastic pads
foam brush
sealer
Steps:
- Assemble your table with metal pieces and pipefittings (figure B).
- Attach flanges to each of the four legs to make feet for the table.
For strength, use a piece of pipe for a crossbar (figure D) between the legs on each side. To attach this piece of metal, screw the pipe in clockwise all the way on the T-joint on one leg, then screw it in counterclockwise in the T-joint on the other leg. This allows the piece to be screwed in halfway on each side.
Stand the table up and work with it until it is level (figure E).
Place plastic pads on each corner at the top (figure F) so the stone can rest on them.
To make the stone stainproof, seal it by brushing on some sealer. Two coats may be necessary.
