Pat and Jodi show how you can improve both the look and the traction on your garage floor by applying an epoxy shield.
Prepare Floor
- We started the cleanup by first removing the freezer and sweeping off the garage floor.
- We then poured the prepping solution into a 2-gallon bucket of water and mixed it with a stir stick until all of the granules were dissolved.
- Next, we spread the solution onto the floor using a stiff bristle broom and scrubbed the entire floor. The prepping solution contains citric acid so be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses when applying the solution.
- To spot-clean oily stains on the floor, we used a stronger concentration of the solution and a scrub brush to help remove the stains.
- Finally, we rinsed the floor until the runoff water ran clear. We used our stiff- bristle broom to flush out any water puddles, then let the floor dry for two hours .
Applying the Shield
- To prepare the epoxy, we poured the two components into a bucket and mixed them with the supplied stirring stick for about 3 minutes; then we let the mixture set for 30 minutes.
- Once the product had set for the recommended time we stirred it again and began applying it to the floor. We used a brush to apply the epoxy around the edges of the garage and a paint roller with an extension pole to apply it to the main floor surface. Be sure to apply only about a 4-foot section at a time and keep a wet edge .
- Next, we tossed the colored vinyl chips onto the wet surface film, then continued to coat the remaining garage floor working in one small section at a time.
