Window Treatments

Fix It Up! : Episode FIX-708 -- More Projects »
One of the best ways to change a room is to spruce up the windows. Adding shutters, blinds or shades can transform a room while adding privacy and protection from the sun.

Obtaining Proper Measurements

Getting exact measurements is essential before starting any window project. First measure from the front of the window opening to the obstacle that projects furthest from the back of the window (figure A). Next, measure the width of the window to the outside of the window opening from edge to edge. Measure all windows, even if they appear to be the same size.

Next, measure the height of the window in three places--left, center and right. Record the smallest of the three measurements--this will ensure an accurate fit. Measure the diagonal as well, from the top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left (figure B). This will provide the "square" of the window.

Installing Shutters

Once your shutters have been ordered and shipped using the proper measurements, you are ready to dry-fit the shutter. Place the shutter inside the window opening and push it back until it is flush with the window casing. Move the louvers up and down to check that the mounting depth will clear the window. Check for plumb using a level. Open the shutter panels and center the frame in the opening (figure C).

Using a cordless drill, pre-drill and screw in two screws into the frame, through the casement, to hold the shutters in place. Continue mounting the shutter by pre-drilling holes and securely attaching with screws through the casement. Place a magnet latch and attach it to the top of the shutter frame (figure D). Mark the location of the magnet plate on the shutter (opposite the latch) and attach it, as well. Finally, check to make sure both shutters open and close properly. This project can cost between 600 and 700 dollars and takes around two hours to complete.

Begin by removing present window treatments. For the inside frame mounting, measure the width between the points where the brackets will be placed. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the window and from top to bottom along the casing. Position the mounting brackets at the corner of the window jamb and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Install the mounting bracket with the supplied screws (figure E).

Next, with the lift cord on the right, push the blind's header bar into the installed brackets. With the blinds in place, flip the end caps over the bar and attach the valance (figure F). Blinds, per window, average around 100 dollars each and this project only takes an hour or two.
