Steps:

1. Measure the width of the doorway using a tape measure or folding rule (figure A).

2. Transfer the measurement to your threshold piece. If you're going to bridge uneven surfaces, such as hardwood flooring and carpeting, choose a threshold that has a recess on one side to accommodate the height of the carpeting (figure B).

3. Clamp the threshold piece to a portable workbench and cut to length using a circular saw. Be sure to wear safety glasses and a dust mask when working with power tools. You could also cut the threshold

4. Center the threshold in the doorway. Make sure the screw holes are over the hardwood floor so the mounting screws can get a good bite without drilling through carpet (figure C). Tuck enough carpet under the threshold so it is held secure.

5. Close the door to make sure the threshold does not interfere before mounting threshold permanently.

6. Drill pilot holes for screws (figure D). Use a drill bit that's just slightly smaller than the mounting screws.

7. Tighten the mounting screws by hand using a ratcheting screwdriver (figure E).
